Kako je osvojen Divlji Zapad) je američki epski vestern film snimljen 1962. godine u režiji Johna Forda, Henryja Hathawaya i Georgea Marshalla, poznat kao jedno od najspektakularnijih i najambicioznijih ostvarenja žanra, odnosno jedan od dva cjelovečernja igrana filma napravljenih u widescreen tehnici Cinerama.
Radnja se sastoji od pet epizoda koje opisuju život nekoliko generacija porodica Prescott od 1839. do 1889. godine, odnosno kroz njihovo sudjelovanje u događajima kao što su borbe sa Indijancima i građanski rat opisuje proces naseljavanja Amerikanaca sa Istočne obale na Zapad.
Za potrebe snimanja filma je angažirano trojica režisera, od kojih su dvojica - Ford i Hathaway - stvorili reputaciju upravo na vesternima; također je okupljena jedna od najimpresivnijih glumačkih postava u historiji Hollywooda, koja je sadržavala neke od najvećih tadašnjih zvijezda, spremnih da se pojave u relativno kratkim ulogama. Muziku za film je trebao komponirati Dimitri Tiomkin, također poznat kao specijalist za vesterne, ali se prije snimanja razbolio te ga je zamijenio Alfred Newman, čija je uvodna tema kasnije postala jedna od najpoznatijih u historiji žanra. Najveća atrakcija filma je, pak, trebala biti Cinerama, koja je gledateljima trebala pružiti još veći spektakl i epski doživljaj.
Usprkos tehničkih problema i incidenata poput onih u kome je kaskader Bob Morgan izgubio nogu, How the West Was Won je postigao cilj, odnosno postao drugi najgledaniji film godine. Kasnije je, međutim, upravo Cinerama postala njegov najveći nedostatak, s obzirom da se široki i spektakularni widescreen kadrovi jednostavno nisu mogli prikazivati na televizijskim aparatima. Neke od tih problema su riješila tek digitalna restauracija iz 2006. godine.
1979. se u SAD prikazivala istoimena TV-serija inspirirana radnjom filma.
