The Supremes je bila američka ženska vokalna grupa poznata po brojnim velikim hitovima diskografske kuće Motown Records 1960-ih.
Nastala je pod imenom The Primettes u Detroitu 1959. Tokom karijere su izvodili pjesme u stilu doo-wopa, popa, soula, brodvejske evergrinove, psychedelic soul i disco. Smatraju se najuspješnijim od svih Motownovim izvođača i najuspješnijom vokalnom grupom u historiji američke zabavne muzike[1] sa 12 singlica na prvom mjestu Billboard Hot 100.[2] Većinu hitova je napisao glavni Motownovom produkcijski tim Holland–Dozier–Holland. Na vrhuncu slave sredinom 1960-ih The Supremes su predstavljali ozbiljnom suparnika The Beatlesima kao najpopularniji bend na svijetu,[2] i često se navodi kako je njihov uspjeh omogućio afroameričkim R&B i soul muzičarima da postanu dio srednje struje.[2]
Članice početnog sastava su bile Florence Ballard, Mary Wilson, Diana Ross i Betty McGlown - sve četvero iz detroitske četvrti Brewster-Douglass,[3] a osnovane su pod imenom The Primettes kao sestrinski sastav muškog benda The Primes (kogha su činili Paul Williams i Eddie Kendricks, kasniji osnivači benda The Temptations).[3] Barbara Martin je zamijenila McGlown 1960, i grupa je sljedeće godine potpisala ugovor s Motownom dobivši ime The Supremes. Martin je napustila bend početkom 1962, a Ross, Ballard i Wilson su nastavili kao trio.
Sredinom 1960-ih The Supremes su uživali ogroman uspjeh sa Ross kao glavnom pjevačicom. Godine 1967. je Motownov predsjednik Berry Gordy preimenovao grupu u Diana Ross & the Supremes, a Ballard zamijenio sa Cindy Birdsong. Ross je napustila bend kako bi nastavila solo-karijeru 1970. Zamijenila ju je Jean Terrell, a bend ponovno dobio ime The Supremes. Iza 1972. se sastav češće mijenjao; Lynda Laurence, Scherrie Payne i Susaye Greene su postajale članicama do sredine 1970-ih. The Supremes su se službeno raspale 1977.
