Protagonisti - koje tumače Irene Dunne i Cary Grant - su bračni par koji se, uvjeren u nevjeru partnera, odlučio razvesti, te prije konačnog rastanka jedno drugom nastoji "torpedirati" veze s novim ljubavnim partnerima. The Awful Truth je poznat kao jedan od rijetkih hollywodoskih filmova svog vremena čiji su scenariji i dijalozi bili improvizirani na samom setu. Usprkos toga je postigao veliki uspjeh, a Leo McCareyu donio Oscar za najbolju režiju. The Awful Truth je Caryja Granta ustoličio kao specijalista za uloge šarmantnih, sofisticiranih komedijaša, odnosno protagonista u romantičnim i "laganim" komedijama, te koje će s uspjehom glumiti sve do kraja karijere.
Godine 1953. je snimljen remake u obliku mjuzikla pod naslovom Let's Do It Again.
