The Soldier

Rupert Brooke (3. august 1887 - 23. april 1915) bio je engleski pjesnik koji je uživao popularnost neposredno pred prvi svjetski rat. Bio je blizak kružoku Bloomsbury Group, a W. B. Yeats ga je opisao kao "najljepšeg mladića u Engleskoj". Nakon izbijanja rata je napisao seriju patriotskih soneta pod naslovom 1914, među kojima se ističe The Soldier. Nedugo poslije toga se priključio kraljevskoj Mornarici. Tokom priprema za Dardanelsku kampanju mu se inficirala rana od komarca te je umro na francuskom bolničkom brodu.
