Oswiu od Nortumbrije

Oswiu (cca. 612 – 15. februar 670), također poznat kao Oswy ili Oswig (staroengleski: Ōswīg) bio je kralj Berncije. Njegov otac, kralj Aethelfrith, ubijen je 616. u borbi protiv istočnoanglijskog kralja Rædwalda i Edwina od Deire. Nakon što je potonji preuzeo bernicijsko prijestolje, Oswiu je prognan zajedno sa svojom braćom i pristašama.

U progonstvu je ostao sve do Edwinove smrti, nakon čega je zavladao njegov brat Oswald; on je, međutim, ubijen 5. augusta 642. od Pende, kralja Mercije, u bitci kod Maserfielda. Nakon toga je Oswiu došao na vlast kao Pendin vazala. Međutim, godine 655. je Penda napao Berniciju, ali ga je Oswiu neočekivano porazio i ubio u bitci kod Winwaeda. Nakon te pobjede je Oswiu stekao tzv. imperium nad svim britanskim vladarima, odnosno titulu a Bretwalde. Istovremeno je sebe proglasio kraljem Mercije, postavivši Pendinog sina Peadu kao vazalnog vladara.

Oswiuova dominacija nad Britanijom je, međutim, trajala kratko. Mercijanci su se pobunili i postavili Pendinog sina Wulfherea za kralja. Oswiu nije želio ponovno ratovati, pa je to priznao. Umjesto toga se više posvetio unutrašnjim pitanjima, odnosno problemima crkve u Nortumbriji, odnosno podjelama zbog kojih je sazvao na sabor u Whitbyju 664. godine, gdje je Oswiu u uskršnjem sporu odlučio prihvatiti rimski metod računjanja datuma. Posljednje godine vladavine su obilježili sukobi sa sinom Ealhfrithom. Oswiu je umro 670. a naslijedio ga je sin Ecgfrith.
