Temelji se na starozavjetnoj Knjizi o Esteri, a radnja je smještena u Perzijsko Carstvo u 5. vijeku pne. Protagonistica, čiji lik tumači Joan Collins, je jevrejska djevojka Estera koja zavede perzijskog kralja Ahasvera (čiji lik tumači Richard Egan) kako bi pomogla svom narodu. Esther and the King se smatra jednim od slabijih hollywoodskih biblijskih spektakala, a što se tumači time da je sniman u Italiji, te da je, usprkos toga što je iza njega stajao veliki hollywoodski studio, svojim stilom i izgledom više podsjećao na niskobudžetna peplum ostvarenja.
